Save the Date for the Annual Christmas Tree and Electronics Recycling Event

Everyone is getting their trees up and stringing their lights now, but do you have a plan for that tree and old electronics after Christmas? Save the date for Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful’s Annual Bring One for the Chipper Event. Over the years, this event has recycled hundreds of live Christmas trees and multiple tons of electronics.

Recycle your live, natural, undecorated Christmas tree after the holiday season, your used electronic devices, and cardboard at The Home Depot on 875 Shugart road on Saturday, December 30, 2023. From 9:00 am to 12:00 pm volunteers will be on site to collect your natural trees and electronics for recycling. There will be a second drop-off site for trees only at Edwards Park also on December 30, 2023 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

There is NO charge for trees and most electronics. The only fee is a $10.00 fee for CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube, television sets and computer monitors. Typical CRT TVs have four to eight pounds of lead in them requiring them to have extra-special handling when they are being recycled and results in a higher cost.

Please remove all ornaments and the base from your trees. Electronics will be sent to a third-party recycler. Volunteers will not be removing any data from your devices before sending them onto recycling. Please make sure you wipe the data from laptops, phones, etc. before dropping off.

Participant have their pick of seed packets while supplies last.

This holiday may look a little different, but we’ve seen how much people are enjoying decorating their homes this year. If you are decorating for Christmas and plan to use a live tree make sure you have a plan for after the holiday! Recycle your live, natural, undecorated Christmas tree after the holiday season and your used electronic devices at The Home Depot on 875 Shugart road on Saturday, January 9, 2021. From 8:00 am to 12:00 pm volunteers will be on-site to collect your natural trees and electronics for recycling.

New to this year we will also be collecting flattened cardboard boxes! If you have big cardboard boxes that won’t fit in your curbside bin, flatten them out and bring them along!

Hundreds of Christmas Trees Recycled in Dalton and Whitfield

Dalton and Whitfield County residents started 2020 off right by recycling natural Christmas trees and electronics. Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful’s Annual Bring One for the Chipper Event was held on January 4th, 2020 at Home Depot on 875 Shugart Road and though the weather started off cold and rainy at the event it did not deter residents from doing the right thing.  

Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful volunteers, Whitfield County Public Works, and Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority (DWSWA) employees were on site to collect natural trees and electronics for recycling. After recycling, participants were able to grab a free seedling or vegetable seed packets.

Exactly 100 trees were recycled at the event and 3,243 pounds of electronics were recycled at the event. After the event, Dalton Public Works and DWSWA continued to collect trees for recycling for free and collected an extra 201 trees for recycling.

The mulch from these trees will be used for beautification across the county throughout the year.

America Recycles Day Billboard Contest Announced for Fall 2019

2018'S WINNER, ALICIA MARTINEZ'S COLORFUL AND DETAILED BILLBOARD. 

The Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority is pleased to announce the 10th Annual America Recycles Day Billboard Contest for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders attending public or private schools participating in the Target Recycling at School program in Whitfield County. 

Students are invited to design a billboard in keeping with the spirit of America Recycles Day, which is celebrated yearly on November 15. The top design out of the three grade levels will be displayed during the month of November on two billboards in Whitfield County.

Schools in Whitfield County eligible to participate include Eastbrook Middle, New Hope Middle, North Whitfield Middle, Valley Point Middle, Westside Middle, Dalton Middle, Northstar School, Crossroads Academy, Christian Heritage School, and Learning Tree School.

During the 2018 contest, Valley Point Middle School 6th grader, Alicia Martinez , won first place overall. Her design includes the phrase, “I want to be recycled!” which was one of the themes of the contest. The artwork is detailed, neat, and very colorful showing recyclables lining up to begin the recycling process.

Themes for this year are, “I recycle. Do you?!” and “I recycle with Recycling Ben!” First, second, and third place prizes will be given in each of the three grade levels. The grand prize is chosen from the three first-place winners. 

The Contest Guide with two versions of the official entry form can be downloaded at www.DWSWA.org. The deadline for entries is October 14, 2019. There is no entry fee, however, an official entry form needs to be included with the artwork. Only artwork submitted directly from a school representative will be accepted. Winners will be announced on October 21.
