Convenience Centers

The Authority collects the following recyclables (in addition to solid waste, yard trimmings, and bulky items) at four staffed convenience centers throughout Whitfield County, including one at its Old Dixie Landfill.  The Authority collects mixed paper, newspaper and magazines, plastic bottles and jugs with the #1 or #2 recycling symbol (NO plastic bags accepted), cardboard, aluminum cans, scrap metal, scrap tires, bi-Metal cans, telephone books, glass (clear, brown, & green), waste oil, lead acid batteries, electronics, and yard trimmings at the convenience centers six days a week.  Yard wastes brought to the convenience centers is processed in a tub grinder and then the mulch material is available for residents free of charge.  For more information about recycling, visit the Recycling Page.

To keep the convenience center patrons abreast of the recycling program, a quarterly scoreboard is posted and updated at all four sites showing the amount of material recycled versus the amount disposed for the quarter and the percentage by weight of material recycled.  Currently the overall percentage for recycling is 4%.  The Authority staff continually audits its vendors to ensure materials are properly managed when collected from the convenience centers.  Residents visited the convenience centers over 426,000 times in 2008.
