Another collection program operated by the Authority targets post-consumer carpet waste and foam padding collected by carpet companies and installers as they return to Whitfield County with old carpet after delivering new carpet manufactured in the area. The Authority has established post-consumer carpet collection center for carpet and foam pad that was historically disposed in the landfill. This material is delivered to the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) for processing, baling, and marketing.
In July 2010, the Authority released a new How to Guide for managing post-consumer carpet Whitfield County, Georgia. In it are step by step instructions on preparing used carpet for proper disposal and recycling. Click here or on the brochure cover to download the guide.
Where does old carpet go?
Carpet goes to the Old Dixie Landfill & Convenience Center where the staff at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) processes it and sends it to manufacturers that will use the materials again. Carpet is no longer considered garbage - it’s a resource to make new carpet, carpet padding, automotive parts, and even energy.
Recycling carpet & carpet pad saves natural resources, conserves landfill space, and saves you money. Recycling allows a product at the end of its useful life to become a new resource.
This guide gives you the basics for preparing and delivering carpet to the MRF.
1.) Free of Debris
Make sure that carpet and carpet pad are clean, dry, and free of debris such as tack strips, nails, wood, and other trash. Debris can damage the equipment involved in processing the materials.
2.) Roll It Up
Roll up carpet and carpet pad separately. If possible, cut the materials into 6 ft. wide sections, then roll up with the face fiber side or yarn side out.
3.) Tie The Roll
Cut a strip of carpet from the edge of the roll about three feet long. Cut two parallel slits along the middle of the roll. Pull the strip of carpet through the two slits and wrap twice to secure.
4.) Get Weighed
Take the rolls to the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center (see address below). First, visit the Scale House to have your vehicle weighed.
5.) Drop It Off
Depending on the time of day, you will be directed to the Materials Recovery Facility or to the After Hours Container for Carpet and Carpet Pad.
6.) Disposal Fee
Receive a discount of 46% off the regular gate fee as a thank you for participating in the post-consumer carpet program. Call the Scale House or visit the landfill section for the current gate fee.
